Johnny Depp interpreta al exitoso escritor Mort Rainey, que está sufriendo un bloqueo en su inspiración y se ha retirado a una solitaria casa al lado del lago, encarando un divorcio con su mujer, Amy (Maria Bello), tras descubrir su infidelidad con Ted Milner (Timothy Hutton), quien ahora es su novio.
