Catch-22 - Season 1

Description
In Italy during the Second World War, Yossarian and his friends were planning dangerous missions as they trained to become flyers in California before moving to an Air Force base on Italian island of Bianosa. Throughout these exercises, there is a scheme to do nineteen risky missions later, and Yossarian hopes to complete his mission to the fullest. Over time, a new colonel came to command, where he immediately increased the share of the mission. At that moment, Yossarian realizes that he is forced to commit himself or to be sent home.

It's all legitimately terrifying, and not the slightest bit funny. That's what makes it hilarious. That's what still makes Catch-22 necessary.

As a period piece with universal refrains, it has a lot going for it.

This adaptation twists the knife in a way that would make Heller proud.

Where it strikes off on its own, whether in dialogue or wholly new scenes, it tends to get obvious and flat.

It's no small feat, then, that the series turns out to be so entertaining but also a worthy adaptation of Heller's novel.

For a series that gradually loses its sharpness in its commentary on power and masculinity in wartime, Abbott's performance constantly reminds you of what's so great about Heller's book.

Catch-22 isn't quite wild enough to join TV's elite satires or sharp enough to leave a mark as lasting as its source material. But it has its moments, and those moments add up to an entrancing experience.

Retains Heller's caustic wit and righteous anger.

I like what they've done with it here overall. It may not be crammed full to bursting with amazing comic actors, the way Nichols' half-right movie was. It's softer, I guess. But it's not soft-headed.

It does a brilliant job of capturing the absurdity, comedy and horror of war. What is it good for? Absolutely nothing.
